Who We Are

Friends of Green Communities (FGC) is a GoSmile Uganda GSU) movement of green dreamers focused on advancing practices that improve environmental quality, address climate change, and reduce development impacts on natural resources. Our efforts focus on projects that prioritize green investments and decisions that protect and restore the natural environment, conserve resources, and build more sustainable communities.

We are currently implementing a Community Fruit–Tree Planting Initiative which aims to train, and distribute fruit tree seedlings to, rural households, churches and schools beginning with Mbarara district. Our target is to plant one (1) million fruit trees per annum, in collaboration with local partners–the FGC Ambassadors. Besides, the communities shall be sensitized and trained in climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices required for fruit trees.

The training package to farmers will consist of a series of fruit management trainings (such as soil conservation–use of manure and inorganic fertilizers, water conservation–improved rain-water harvesting techniques, crop nutrition, tree management, organic agriculture, among other practices).

Thrilled with the improved fruit production and quality, the household farmers shall ably invest in more income-generating farm activities and most importantly pay for their children's school fees. The schools shall have an extra income source, in addition to providing fruits to supplement the nutrition and health of the pupils. The projects next steps are engaging partners, including the International Tree Foundation (ITF), the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), theInternational Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation and The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) for technical and financial support.
